Australia Junior Squad - Polocrosse Squad
Back in
June of this year the Polocrosse Association of Australia received
over 120 nominations from talented Juniors around Australia who all
wanted to be part of the very first Australian Junior Boot Camp and
Squad.
The Selectors were in the unenviable position of selecting only 28
Juniors to be part of this brilliant initiative. The Selectors
agonised over the selection and were very quick to point out that
there is so much Junior talent around
Australia
and they, along with the Polocrosse Australia Board, encourage all
those eligible Juniors who missed out this time to nominate again as
soon as 2010 Nominations are called next year.
The Polocrosse Association of Australia is pleased to announce the
Australia Junior Squad – Polocrosse Squad

Hi There...the countdown is on!
Just like many of you I am preparing for the 2008 Australian
Polocrosse Nationals. I am excited as these Nationals will be
in my homestate!
As you know the Nationals are being held at the State Equestrian
Centre...it is a brilliant place.
The organising committee here in WA are working so hard to ensure
that everyone has a great time; so you had better come over in the
mood to enjoy yourself and play and watch some great Polocrosse.
I was thinking the other day about what I do to prepare for the
Nationals and of course that big trip across the Nullarbor; I have
written a few tips ...
I am looking forward to seeing you all over here!
Fitness...my
Horse!
Generally a horse’s peak fitness for Polocrosse is 12 to 14 weeks
work, dependant on horse type and temperament, so try and aim for
them to be at there peak for the 4 days the Nationals are on. If
travelling I would recommend you cut down on working the horses
approx a week prior
(must remember to cut down on grain intake during this period),
personal preference is to continue working them daily during the
travel and then increasing there work regime when arriving in Perth.
Fitness...Me!
It is up to your individual preference, however personally I believe
my physical fitness improves my eye-ball coordination, stamina,
flexibility and mental strength when competing. If you find you are
out of breath during a chukka, require more energy or can’t get out
of the saddle that little bit further to reach the ball, then it may
be worth acknowledging you need to work on your fitness. ( I am sure
naturally most of you would be fit anyway)
Sleep and Nutrition
Travelling and catching up with your team mates is a lot of fun,
but it will be tiring, however I find sufficient sleep and rest is
essential if you want to maximise your concentration and
coordination when playing. Healthy eating and plenty of water will
increase your energy levels. And while you are over here remember
to Slip Slop Slap!
Travelling
This is a vital part of your preparation for Nationals as the
horses are vital for you and your teams success, so look after them
to the best of your ability. Here are some Quick Travel Tips…
Make sure the fluids are
up, check for dehydration by pinching there skin.
Have 2 buckets of water,
one with molasses in even if they aren’t fussy drinkers (you will
find a lot of the water across the Nullarbor is salty- so taking
your own might be of benefit if possible
Use electrolytes to rehydrate them- however don’t over do it as they
dehydrate further.
Make sure they are not to hot on the truck- my preference is no rug
or maybe a light one. If doing long stints ( ie. The Nullarbor) try
and get them off the truck at least once for a walk and stretch,
bite to eat (preferably hay for roughage) and drink
Cut the Grain right out of their feed
If a horse isn’t its self and you know something isn’t right- stay
put and get a local vet to check him/her out.
Mental
Attitude
You all have a job to do- and all those that have put in a
considerable amount of effort to get you to these nationals need to
be thanked. I believe the best way to do that is focus on you goal
and do what it takes to achieve it, to the best of your ability. It
is a huge honour to represent your State so take that step in your
stride in doing the absolute best you can do in representing all of
them.
See you
soon
Suzette
