World Cup team builds momentum

It’s been an action-packed start to the year for our World Cup team, with a training camp in January, a hit-out at the recent Sale carnival and a tour to NZ coming up.

Team camp at Berragoon (26 – 28 January 2024)

Our World Cup team arrived at Berragoon on Friday morning, diving straight into refining their processes for practice times and horse allocation. Working through two pools of horses, the team engaged in practice chukkas and games, along with arena work on separate horses.

Anthony Miles immediately put the team through their fitness paces. Anthony, who has an extensive background of working with AFL Clubs, was then joined by retired Australian Olympic and Commonwealth runner, Patrick Scammell, for a preparation and mindset workshop. To round out the weekend the team went into match play against local players on a pool of horses.

During the weekend Ben Simpson from OGA Creative secured some team photos and captured some memorable training moments (see below).

Importantly, a special thanks to the Grills family for coordinating horses, grooms, catering and transport to and from the airport, first aid and sports trainer skills, and to all who loaned horses for the weekend.

Match play at Sale, Victoria (10 – 11 February 2024)

During early February, our World Cup team travelled to Sale to play against a mainly Victorian-based Australia squad All Stars team, with a goal of focussing on horse pool allocation and rotation in game situations.

The Victorian polocrosse community warmly welcomed the team at the presentation on Friday evening and the opposing team made our World Cup representatives work for the win. By the end of Saturday’s two matches the score was one win each. Following the surprise loss on Saturday afternoon, the World Cup team regrouped and ironed out their previous game mistakes to win the third and final match on Sunday.

The All Stars team provided the perfect tough hit-out for our World Cup team and allowed them to gather valuable feedback on which to build their game.

A big thank you to Sale Polocrosse Club and the Victorian polocrosse community for a successful weekend and to all who loaned horses, bedding, and assisted in any way.

New Zealand Tour (7 – 11 March 2024)

We’re thrilled to announce the upcoming tour to New Zealand for our World Cup team! Our team will meet in Auckland on Thursday, 7 March,  before travelling south to Taumarunui. Friday morning will see the horse pool draw and practice, followed by a lunch with our New Zealand counterparts. The three-match test series will take place on Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday and promises to be an intense and exhilarating experience for all. The team and Polocrosse Australia, thank our neighbours in New Zealand Polocrosse Association with this international opportunity.
