Although the Goodline Australian Polocrosse World Cup Team was narrowly defeated in the final, going down a heartbreaking 29 to 28 to South Africa at the 2024 Ignition Group Polocrosse World Cup, the campaign has been a hands-down success for the sport of polocrosse.
“From the integral partnership with Goodline Australia, to the generous backing of our many sponsors, supporters and heartfelt support from grassroots followers around the World, this campaign has been a raging success for our sport,” Polocrosse Australia President, Mick Templeton said.
“We came painstakingly close to what would have been a historic win for Australia, but I can personally say I am so very proud of the team, coaches and support crew.
“From start to finish everyone involved represented Australia in the highest regard possible, including as a team chipping in and helping the Barbarian teams when they played. To be honest, these players were very appreciative and a bit star struck when the Aussies helped out, which was quite humbling to see and demonstrated the values we uphold as a sport, that go well beyond winning.
“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of our generous partners, sponsors and supported who contributed to our campaign, without your support our team would not have been able to represent our country at the pinnacle event for our sport.
“The messages of support the team and the support crew on the ground received from Australia throughout the week meant the world to us all – again thank you to everyone for their support.”
Narrowest loss underpins motivation for future success
The match, a repeat of the 2019 World Cup Final, played in Warwick, QLD, where Australia defeated South Africa, 34 to 21, did not go Australia’s way this time, despite the team being undefeated throughout the 2024 World Cup tournament. But the team is determined to use this loss as motivation to improve and come back stronger.
“As Captain of the Goodline Australian World Cup Polocrosse Team I’d like to say thanks to every supporter, of every age, from Australia – and all over the world — who got behind us for the Ignition Group World Cup,” Goodline Australian World Cup Team Captain, Jimmy Grills said.
“It was amazing to feel that amount of support and drive behind us.
“Obviously, our team, coaching staff, sporting community, every one of you, and our country are hurting. We feel we let one get away, but it wasn’t because we didn’t try our best to get it done, and to bring The Cup home.
“This team has been in this situation before, we’ve come back before, and we’ll come again. Off a loss like this, it can go one way or another, you have to choose — you can turn it into fuel and make it better or you can let it destroy you. We know which path we’re ready to take.
“We’re beat but we’re not broken. We’re going to turn up again, I hope the rest of the world is ready for that.”
