Strengthening welfare: Updated horse drug testing policy released

Polocrosse Australia has released version 2.3 of the Horse drug testing policy, effective February 2026.

Polocrosse Australia’s Horse Welfare Committee led the update with the support of Dr Chris Reardon, the appointed veterinarian for the 2026 National Championships in Darwin, and input from Member States.

The policy continues to align with Equestrian Australia and the FEI’s the ‘Clean sport for horses’ approach and follows the FEI equine prohibited substances list.

Owners and/or persons responsible must complete PA’s Equine Medication Treatment Logbook for any horse treated with controlled substances within 14 days prior to and during competition. The logbook must be provided at the time of swabbing, if swabbing is required.

There will be no ‘blanket exemptions’ for the 2026 National Championships in Darwin. Appointed tournament veterinarian, Dr Chris Reardon, will considered any medication exemptions on a case-by-case basis. The final discretion on all exemptions will rest with Dr Reardon.

Members are encouraged to read the full Polocrosse Australia Horse drug testing policy.
